The Porsche 911 GT1 ’98 was Porsche’s final evolution of its GT1 racer, designed specifically for endurance dominance. It competed in the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans, entered by the Mobil 1 Porsche AG team with two cars.
The #26 machine, driven by Laurent Aïello, Allan McNish, and Stéphane Ortelli, secured a stunning overall victory, outlasting rivals from Toyota and Mercedes. Its sister car, the #25 driven by Jörg Müller, Uwe Alzen, and Bob Wollek, ran second for much of the race before retiring late with mechanical trouble.
That triumph gave Porsche its 16th Le Mans win, cementing the 911 GT1’s legacy as both a road-based GT and a full-fledged prototype in spirit.
The ’98 model marked the end of the GT1 era for Porsche before the brand shifted toward purpose-built Le Mans prototypes in the years that followed.
