Type VII U-boats were the most common German U-boats during World War II. The Type VIIC was basically the backbone of the German U-boat fleet, with 568 built between 1940 and 1945.

This model was a solid fighting machine and could be found pretty much everywhere U-boats were active. However, its range of just 6,500 nautical miles was noticeably shorter than the larger Type IX, which could go up to 11,000 nautical miles.
This limitation really restricted how long it could operate in the more distant parts of the western and southern Atlantic without needing to refuel from a tender or U-boat tanker.
