A sloop (from the Dutch “sloep,” which comes from the French “chaloupe”) is a sailboat that features a single mast and a fore-and-aft rig.
A sloop has just one headsail, while a vessel with two or more headsails is called a “cutter,” and its mast is typically set further aft than a sloopโs.
In the USA, however, a sloop can have one, two, or even three headsails in front of the mast, and the term “cutter” is not often used for sailboats.
